Pre-debut

At the beginning of 2012, B2M Entertainment formally announced to the public that they would be releasing a girl group by releasing photos and profile of the members. Netizens were immediately impressed with each member and their respective pre-debut work. Yang Jiwon was originally a member of Five Girls, a girl group featuring herself, After School's Uee, Secret's Hyosung, Wonder Girls' Yubin and G.NA. She was also a member of T-ara and released a song called "Good Person" as a soundtrack for the Korean drama 'Cinderella Man'. But before the group could debut, she left due to creative differences. Kim BoA was Kara, Rainbow and Infinite's vocal trainer under Sweetune. Kim Bo Hyung was originally set to debut in 2NE1. Park Narae was a contestant on the first season of Superstar K. Park Joo Hyun also had several previous musical ventures and was featured on label-mate Heo Young Saeng's music video Let It Go. She also performed as the guest rapper on the live performances of the song.
2012: Debut, Russian Roulette, and Painkiller
On January 10, 2012, the group released their first digital single "Potently" (독하게). The music video sparked high interest, as their fellow label-mate Lee Hyori made an appearance.
On January 31, 2012, B2M Entertainment official announced that the group would have their formal debut with a mini-album, titled Russian Roulette. A music video teaser for "Russian Roulette" was released the following day. The full-length music video was released on February 7, 2012.[5] Promotions for "Russian Roulette" began two days later on M! Countdown.[6] The lyrics of the song were later modified in order to meet MBC's broadcasting standards.
The group released a repackaged EP titled Painkiller, on March 29, 2012, promoting the title track of the same name.
